The Wohl Project
Hebrew Speech Synthesizer

Overview

In the course of an R&D project at the Jerusalem College of Technology, the Wohl Hebrew Speech Synthesizer (HSS) has been developed.  This synthesizer serves as a major component in a Hebrew Text-to-Speech (HTTS) engine.  Some applications of HSS and HTTS in systems include:

  • Providing a user-friendly man-machine interface for computers and electronic devices
  • Converting textual data base information into audio form
  • Employing interactive response in stationary, portable, and vehicular telephones
  • Enabling blind individuals to read, with the help of OCR (optical character recognition); to    operate computers, using a Hebrew screen-reader; to word process; to use the internet (email); and to navigate, with the help of GPS (global position satellites)
  • Helping vocally disabled persons to speak by using a VOCA (voice output communication aid)
  • Advancing miscellaneous multimedia and internet applications

This project has been sponsored by Mr. & Mrs. Maurice and Vivienne Wohl of Geneva, Switzerland, to advance the use of the Hebrew language in the modern era and especially to benefit the various handicapped users of HSS.  Dr. Yehuda Sonnenblick and Mr. Aryeh Teitelbaum, JCT technologists, in collaboration with Prof. Asher Laufer, a consultant linguist, have developed the synthesizer.
